If you are considering to apply to the CS graduate program and hope to work with me in the general area of computer networks and distributed systems, I suggest you read this note.

PhD student recruiting and advising

As a junior faculty member, I will recruit PhD students very carefully, partly because I have limited financial support for students. However, if you are a well-qualified and strongly-motivated student, you can always contact me. To justify you qualification and motivation, I prefer you talk to me about your background and expertise, and if possible, work on a project. I expect that the students have strong (1) programming skills (past projects are evidence), and (2) analytical skills (knowledge in algorithms, mathematics and statistics is essential).

You should always contact the graduate admission staff, not me directly, regarding the general application process. Please do not send me detailed files (statements, transcripts, and standard test scores, etc).

Once in the PhD program and starting research, I expect you to work hard and to dedicate yourself to research. For sure, I will find promising projects and observe your progress (and research productivity). You will have plenty of opportunities to talk to me and discuss with me the problems in research. After all, I consider that your success in pursuing an advanced degree (and a bright future) is tightly coupled with my career.
